File # 2015-638
On Monday September 21st, 2015 at approximately 08:35 AM, members of the Nootka Sound RCMP along with the British Columbia Conservation Service were dispatched to a report of a bull elk having been shot on a logging road near Gold River.
As a result of detailed information provided by members of the public a traffic stop was initiated with a suspect vehicle that had been observed leaving the isolated area where the elk had been shot and left behind. Two male residents of Vancouver Island were subsequently taken into custody and held for a bail hearing.
The following charges have been approved by a Judicial Justice of the Peace against the two males, Xiao WU(34) and Song ZHANG(51):
- Careless Use of a Firearm x 4
- Possession of a loaded restricted firearm
- Unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm
- Unauthorized possession of restricted ammunition
The two males were released from custody on strict conditions and have a court appearance scheduled for January 15, 2016.
The investigation is currently ongoing with the assistance of the British Columbia Conservation Service and further charges under the Wildlife Act are anticipated.
The Nootka Sound RCMP would like to thank the public for their assistance in this matter and would like to remind the public that if you observe any illegal hunting to please contact your local RCMP Detachment or the British Columbia Conservation Service at their Report All Poachers & Polluters hotline at 1-877-952-7277.
